What is Ovulation Induction?

This is the first step in the management of infertility. In this basic technique the female partner receives certain medications for development of one or more mature follicles in a woman’s ovaries. Pelvic ultrasound scans are used to access the endometrium (lining of the womb) and to determine how the follicles are developing.

Blood tests may also be carried out to measure hormone levels and helps to determine when a woman is most likely to ovulate (a woman’s most fertile time).

Ovulation induction cycles are followed by a hCG injection to induce ovulation. Then the couple is advised to have intercourse.

Women that have irregular cycles or anovulation (do not ovulate) may be treated by this means as these women do not regularly develop mature follicles themselves.

Step 1: Stimulation

Certain medications are given for development of one or more mature follicles in a woman’s ovaries.

Step 2: Control

Pelvic ultrasound scans are used to access the endometrium (lining of the womb) and to determine how the follicles are developing.

Step 3: Egg Release

Ovulation induction cycles are followed by a hCG injection to induce ovulation, the final maturation of the egg and loosening of the egg from the follicle wall.

Step 4: Timed Intercourse

Then, the couple is advised to have intercourse as per the ovulation scan and days suggested by the doctor.
